Water Filter Cartridges - How to Reuse Your Water Filters
Water filters are usually replaced every couple of weeks or months. These used filters are then thrown away without a second thought. They are not expensive to replace and this is why people usually don't think about the fact that they can actually be cleaned and reused. To be more exact, the filter cartridges can be cleaned, making the water filters usable again. This in turn, saves money.
In order to properly clean your cartridges, you will need the following: some muriatic acid, two plastic buckets and some protective eye gear and clothing. You can buy the muriatic acid from the local hardware or DIY store, it hardly costs a few dollars.
And this is how to do it:
Make sure that the container or plastic bucket is big enough for the cartridge to lay down horizontally. Then pour half a gallon of water in it.
Add one cup of acid in the water and make sure you are outside in the fresh air when you do it. Alternatively be in a well ventilated area.
Take out the cartridge from the filter and clean it as much as possible with clean water first, so the extra debris leaves right away.
Put the cartridge in the bucket with water and acid and leave it for a week or so to soak and remove the remaining debris.
Once the rust is entirely removed from the cartridge, take it out from the bucket and then put it in the second bucket which has clean water in it.
Finally, rinse it with flowing water.
Following these steps you will be able to easily reuse your water filters and save some money in the process. Don't forget buying new filters every time costs more than buying that muriatic acid once, since the acid water can be reused a couple of times. All it needs is to be stored away in a safe place until the next use. Also by reusing them you help protect the environment.

The two largest manufacturers of water filtration products are Brita and PUR. Both companies have large customer bases and both spend lots of money on marketing. Short of using the two product lines yourself, it can be hard to discern which one makes the better filter. After all, they are priced similarly and they are both certified for water purity. If you look at a broad range of data, however, PUR comes out on top by a slim margin.
NSF International, an independent non-profit focused on developing standards in public health, looked at both Brita and PUR filters. They found that, for the most part, Brita and PUR filters perform almost equally well when it comes to chlorine and lead removal. NSF International concluded that both Brita and PUR make filters that meet high water purity standards. This is obviously the most important consideration when choosing a water filter. If both companies are almost equally effective at water filtration, what other areas can we look at if we want to compare the two?
Another point to consider when comparing these two filters is design. Both Brita and PUR have a number of products available, with the most popular being their countertop pitchers and dispensers. Both companies make pitchers that are well designed and durable, but PUR receives high marks for the quality of their spigots (they aren't prone to leaking) and its space-saving design (the PUR DS1800z, for example, easily fits in narrow spaces in a refrigerator).
A final area to explore when comparing these two products is cost. PUR and Brita filters have a very similar price point. For countertop dispenser filters, they both run around . In some cases, you can actually find PUR filters for several dollars less. The replacement filters for both Brita and PUR are also similarly priced. In terms of faucet-mounted filters, Brita products are priced slightly cheaper.
There are lots of different options when it comes to purifying water within your home. On the more expensive end of the scale are reverse osmosis filters and whole house filtration systems. Cheaper, and equally effective, are well designed countertop dispenser and faucet-mounted filters, like those manufactured by PUR and Brita.
Brita and PUR are almost identical in many ways. They are both certified by NSF International and they both have similar price points for their products. But it is PUR that has the slight edge overall because of their design features.

Presenting "Jungle Bubble", my entry into the Aquatic Gardeners' Association 11th Annual Aquascaping Contest (2010). It's about 31 liters in total volume (I think I said 35 by mistake) and 40 cm in diameter. This bowl requires no filtration, as the plants provide it themselves. The water is still crystal clear after a week. Apart from light (11W fluorescent and 4W LED, both from IKEA, 13 hours/day), CO2 (about 0.7 bubbles/second for 10 hours/day), and Tetro Pro Colour food, I add only Seachem Potassium, Iron, and Trace, in doses of about 50-100% of advised levels, once or twice a week, depending on plant health and algae level. Algae does slowly accumulate as pinpricks on the glass, which I remove during my weekly maintenance cycle, along with any plant leaves that I choose to trim. I change about 80% of the water per week, not because it needs so much, but because it allows me access to the plants at the bottom of the bowl for trimming. Fish: 3 cardinal tetras, 2 ember tetras, 2 blue ram cichlids, 2 otocinclus catfish, and 2 Yamato (Amano) shrimp. I feed them once a day in an amount that can be eaten in about 10 minutes. I have no heater, as I live in the tropics. (Contrary to what I said in the video, I suppose my temperature is stable enough year-round, although I don't have a way to place the bowl in the sun and keep it cool enough.) A Sand Water Filter Removes Particles - Now Find Out How to Get Rid of Harmful Chemicals Too
If you are living somewhere that requires you to draw your water from a well or other freshwater source, then I advise that you use a sand water filter. These filters are designed to remove the silt and sediment from your water, just as the name implies. I also advise you to get your water source tested for contaminants to ensure that further filtering methods aren't necessary.
Should you be among the majority of people that are drawing their drinking water from a municipal source, then you haven't got any need for such a filter. Your local water treatment facility is equipped to remove all of the particulates that may be present in the water coming out of its natural source. As a matter of fact, the demineralization of your drinking water is the primary function of these facilities.
A sand water filter may not be a concern when drawing from a municipal source, but that is not to say that you might not need other forms of purification. While extremely efficient in removing particulates from your water, the treatment facilities are less than adequate at removing other contaminants from your water. Let me tell you just how limited the capabilities of the treatment facilities really are.
The porous membrane filters that these facilities use to clean your water are incapable of removing anything of equal or lesser molecular weight than the water being filtered. What this means is that every chemical agent and microscopic organism present in the water will easily pass right through the filter. From there, it is all downhill until these contaminants are released from your tap.
Some companies try will try to sell a sand water filter to a homeowner paying for municipal water. The idea of any sand or sediment possibly making it into your home should pale in the reality that there are some 80,000 possible chemicals present in our reservoir system. Studies have shown that there could be anywhere from five to nine chemical agents in every glass of water you drink.
Now, the EPA and the treatment facilities will try to make you feel better about the possibility of chemicals in your water by telling you they are only available in trace amounts. Whether in trace amounts or not, when two or more chemicals come together there is a reaction which makes each one infinitely stronger. These chemicals can and will have an effect on your system.
What you need instead of a sand water filter is a home water purification system designed to rid your water of all possible impurities. These systems utilize a granular activated carbon filter, a multi media block, a sub micron filter, and an ion exchange. These four filters guarantee the removal of up to 99% of all chemicals, microscopic organisms and cysts, and traces of toxic heavy metals.
A sand water filter is limited in the scope of what it can do for you, even in situations where using one is warranted. No matter who you are, you can benefit from the use of a home purification system that takes all of the danger out of drinking water from a tap.

Pool Filters: Keeping Pool Water Clean and Safe for the Whole Family
A swimming pool filter is one of the many pool maintenance tools to keep your swimming pool clear, fresh-looking and safe to use. They are porous materials such as a cloth, sand, or paper, used in straining away particles, dirt, and other kinds of debris coming from water which undergoes the circulation process and is pushed back to the swimming pool as clean water. Circulating the water continuously through these pool filters is necessary to prevent the growth of algae which is an organism that easily grows and lives mainly in water. It is also responsible in trapping microbes and germs which cannot be detected by the normal eye and which will cause many problems in your plumbing system.
There are two parts of a pool filter working together to make an effective entrapment of particles and producing clean water. These are the motor and the pump and the filter itself. The motor and the pump lets the water enter into it and then pushes it back to pass by the filter which in turn does the filtration process. The pool filter is composed of either these three; sand, diatomaceous material or a cartridge. For the sand filter, water is pushed through a sand filter from the top leaving dirty water on it and passes through lateral tubes which exit water to the bottom bringing out clean water. If the filter becomes clogged up due to dirt which accumulated on it, the pressure of water running out of the tubes decreases, thus, the filter is washed in the reverse process and the dirt is dumped in an allotted container or area where it would dry out and mingle with the ground. If the sand becomes really dirty due to continuous usage, it should be disposed and should be replaced.
For the cartridge type of pool filter, water passes through a filter which catches the dirty particles. Cartridges are much better to use than sand because it is wider in capacity to hold dirt while sand can easily clog up and needs to be replaced. Cartridges can last for years depending upon the kind of fiber materials used, thus, lesser pressure is exerted by the pump and more flow is seen at the bottom. This type of filter also limits you to touch them regularly like sand.
Another type of pool filter is the diatomaceous earth (diatomite) or the water polisher. This is a porous and soft rock which has many industrial uses such as in filtration. These are obtained through mining and according to researchers these are the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms which are a group of algae. They are very small and can filter out smaller particles. They are backwashed like sand but require higher pressure than cartridge pool filter.
Buying a pool filter will depend upon the capacity of your pool but a bigger pool filter that is larger than the pool's capacity is much more preferred for effective and fast cleaning of your swimming pool.
